Nothing made me realize this more than the San Francisco budget cuts to the Department of Public Health. After 21 years as a forensic nurse in the child sexual abuse agency, my position was suddenly eliminated. At 64-1/2, with a mobility disability, no other nursing positions were available to me so I had to retire, changing my life radically. Besides the $100,000 drop in my income, it was the first time in 45 years, I was no longer in nursing. I am still in mourning ten months later. I loved my work and the children and I wasn't ready yet for being put out to pasture. I love my family and friends but not being part of my nursing family is so sad for me.
